Maio 5 Lagar de Costa 2020

The old-vine cuvée 2020 MAIO5 comes from an ungrafted 90-year-old plot of Albariño on sandy granite soils and was kept in stainless steel for one year, the first six months of which with lees. They look for fresh and age-worthy wines with acidity and minerality and that increasingly show the saltiness of the zone a couple of years after the harvest when they have rendered the baby fat and show a more complex nose of dry herbs and wet stones. It's clean, precise, tasty and long, with good ripeness and 13.5% alcohol. 3,000 bottles were filled in June 2022.

Showcasing two 100-year-old parcels in Castrelo – Oureiriño and Valdecustes – Maio is part of a brilliant line up from siblings Manuel and Sonia Castro. Lees aged for 12 months in stainless steel, it's a balanced Albariño without artifice, showing engaging purity, top notes of fennel and stem ginger and plenty of extract and palate length. 2023-30
