The Donnafugata 2019 Etna Rosso Contrada Marchesa offers evident oak spice, especially at this early stage, and the wine will certainly require more bottle time, even just another year to flesh out. There is dark fruit and blackcurrant, but you also get cinnamon and sweet nutmeg. The finish is tight and structured.
Contrada Marchesa is situated in Passopisciaro on the north slope of Etna, at about 750m. Vinified in stainless steel and matured in used French oak barriques for 14 months, it then spends a minimum of 22 months in the bottle. The result is a wine expressing ripe cherry and raspberry with intense, dusty tannins, earthy depth, and a very vertical, mineral palate.
