Wonderfully poised and classy Godello that hasn’t lost its wild side! Vines come from Espanillo, in the mountains north of Cacabelos, from clay and slate soils. The wine offers layers of forest aromas, mint and herbal notes, as well as fresh apricot and mango while the palate is creamy and weighty after four years in 500L barrels and a further year in bottle before release. The oak grain is noticeably fine and balances a seductive, waxy texture. With impressive vibrancy and a morish saline finish, this is an outstanding white that will gain even more complexity with time. 2024-29
Restrained richness on the nose with a broad, complex palate–well-constructed with a certain firmness. Medium- to full-bodied, demonstrating the variety’s capacity to age gracefully. From small parcels, this spends four years in barriques, followed by two years in the bottle. Drink now or hold.
I also tasted the 2019 La Grande Cuvée again, a Godello with an extended élevage of 48 months (four years) in 500-liter barrels. 2019 was a very warm year in the zone, and the wine is a little riper and rounder. It has 13.5% alcohol with a pH of 3.2. It seems to be developing at a slightly faster pace than I anticipated and shows a little more oxidative and polished. 1,200 bottles were filled in September 2023.
