Vinha meticulosamente parcelada, beneficiando de um trabalho preciso e adaptado às características de cada terroir. Entre todas elas, destaca-se a Butte de Pichon Baron, a propriedade histórica do «château», que já se encontrava em produção quando o «cru» foi criado, em 1694. Esta dedica-se exclusivamente à elaboração do «grand vin» da casa e representa a maior parte do seu «coupage».

Clima
As condições climáticas de 2023 foram muito variadas. O ano, em geral, foi marcado por um tempo ensolarado e temperaturas elevadas, o que permitiu uma maturação ideal das uvas, particularmente das Cabernet Sauvignon, que em Pauillac se revelaram espetaculares. No entanto, um início de agosto fresco e nublado, combinado com um tempo quente e ensolarado antes e depois, resultou em uvas de excelente maturação, mas também de notável frescura. No Château Pichon Baron, as boas condições de setembro permitiram à equipa colher cada parcela no momento ideal, resultando em excelentes vinhos frescos, equilibrados e profundos a todos os níveis, mas sobretudo neste «grand vin» de harmonia excecional, com uma generosa maturação solar e complexidade combinadas com frescura e taninos finos e elegantes de grande persistência.
Colheita
A vindima manual decorreu entre os dias 12 de setembro e 4 de outubro de 2023. 44% da colheita foi utilizada na elaboração deste «grand vin».
Envelhecimento
Estágio de 18 meses em barricas de carvalho francês, sendo 70% novas e os restantes 30% de utilização única.

James Suckling:

A rich and rather flamboyant Baron with plenty of tannic structure and intensity. It's full-bodied and layered with plenty of ripe fruit, but then it tightens at the end, with flavors of black currants, bark, flowers, dark tobacco, graphite and citrus acidity. Lively at the end. 80% cabernet sauvignon and 20% merlot. Best after 2029.

The Wine Advocate:

The 2023 Pichon-Longueville Baron has turned out impressively, revealing aromas of cassis, pencil shavings, violet, spices and smoldering embers, with new oak all but invisible. Medium- to full-bodied, deep and layered, it is beautifully balanced, built around a fleshy core of fruit and a concentrated mid-palate, framed by powdery tannins and concluding with a long, mineral and resonant finish. It achieves a rare synthesis of classical identity and seductive charm.

Decanter:

Perfumed nose, fragrant and so scented, a touch of blackcurrant leaf, plum, graphite and dark chocolate. Silky soft, bright and so delicately presented. Crunchy and crisp red fruits and ripe black fruits with some spiced undercurrents and wet stone touches. Much lighter in terms of fruit profile than some - summer berries, tangy and vibrant with super fine tannins giving the structure and support. This has finesse and power - less plushness and richness than last year of course - it’s more sleek and straight, firm and controlled but still has width and layers of flavour and texture. Refined, and definitely cool. ‘Classicism’ with no overt heat on offer. I love the hint of strawberry sweetness and tannins that completely coat the mouth. I think this will be great in time. Maybe not so charming right now but there’s no faulting the finesse and refinement. 44% grand vin production. 12% press. 3.7pH.
