Vinhedo situado na vila de Ábalos, a 630 metros de altitude, num lugar de difícil acesso à serra da Cantábria. Condução em vaso. Orientação este-oeste. Viticultura biológica.

Arcillo-calcário.

Atlântico com influências mediterrânicas.

Vindima manual feita por pessoal especializado que faz uma seleção manual cepa a cepa.
Vinificação
Transporte em caixas de 20 kg. Desengace manual com seleção grão a grão para posterior encoado por gravidade em microdepósito de 2.000 kg. Piscas e pisadas diárias. Fermentação maloláctica espontânea em foudres de carvalho francês de 600 litros.
Envelhecimento
Estágio de cerca de 16 meses em barricas de carvalho de 600 litros.
Engarrafamento
Em dezembro de 2024, depois de filtrado suavemente e sem estabilizar.

The Wine Advocate:

The 2023 El Escolladero, like its siblings, carries lieu-dit information on its label. It's from the lieu-dit of El Meadero (which doesn't sound that nice in Spanish), a 0.95-hectare plot on clay and limestone soils in the village of Ábalos that was planted in 1950 at 660 meters above sea level. It's a little backward and with the seriousness that I noticed in all the 2023s. It's 80% Tempranillo and 20% Graciano (all the wines seem to have more Graciano this year) that ripened to 14.1% alcohol but keeping a pH of 3.42, delivering a powerful and elegant wine. It's juicy, round and young, with abundant, very chalky tannins. The destemmed but uncrushed grapes fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in 600-liter oak foudres for 12 months. 1,300 bottles were filled in December 2024. - Luis Gutiérrez.

2023 wasn’t the easiest vintage in Rioja, but Arturo de Miguel argues that the people who got their viticulture right made very good wines, this being one of them. Sourced from a 63-year-old parcel at 650 metres in Ábalos, it’s a grippy, sinewy, compact cuvée of Tempranillo and 15% Graciano with sage and oregano top notes, subtle reduction, plum, redcurrant and bramble flavours and a balanced, tapering finish. 2028-38
