Descrição

Macán representa uma visão moderna e muito pessoal dos vinhos de alta expressão e máxima qualidade da D.O.Ca. Rioja. É uma aposta na delicadeza, elegância, complexidade e potência, e constitui o estandarte da Bodegas Benjamin de Rothschild & Vega Sicilia, o projeto conjunto iniciado pela Tempos Vega Sicilia e pela Compañía Vinícola Edmond de Rothschild em 2004. 2009 foi a primeira colheita lançada no mercado e, desde a anterior 2020, abunda numa nova abordagem na sua definição, apostando em novas parcelas e variedades, além da Tempranillo, neste caso com uma pequena contribuição de Graciano. Nas palavras do crítico Luis Gutiérrez, «sério, harmonioso e subtil, mais elegante do que qualquer outra colheita anterior, o que reflete a frescura da colheita».

Vinhas de uma seleção cuidadosa de parcelas situadas em terraços a 500 metros de altitude nas localidades de San Vicente de la Sonsierra, Labastida, Ábalos, Navaridas e Elvillar.

Pobre, com cascalho, pouco evoluído e de natureza argilo-calcária.

4.000 quilogramas por hectare, o que equivale a 28 hectolitros por hectare.

Estágio de 12 meses em barricas e foudres, seguido de outros 6 meses em cubas de carvalho com capacidade para 20.000 litros.

Tim Atkin:

Gonzalo Iturriaga only used 1% Graciano in the blend with Tempranillo here, but he says it has a “huge” influence. Aged in foudres and 40% new oak, it’s a very fine pan-Sonsierra blend that partners components from Ábalos, Elvillar, Labastida, Navaridas and San Vicente de la Sonsierra. Polished, refreshing and self-assured, it has layers of blackberry, liquorice and tangerine, textured tannins and a balanced, refreshing finish. Rioja meets Bordeaux in more senses than one. 2027-35. 

James Suckling:

A depth of fresh dark berries and black plums is adorned with complex graphite, balsam, fine spices and cocoa powder with hints of bay leaves and minerals. Tannins are tense, nervy and chalky. Long and tightly wound but well-dissolved. One of the best examples of Macan. An exciting vintage. Drink from 2026 and beyond. (Zekun Shuai)

The Wine Advocate:

The 2021 Macán is from a year that had above-average rainfall and some hail in June that lowered yields but good weather during harvest. It has 1% Graciano. It comes in at 14.5% alcohol, with a pH of 3.8 and five grams of acidity. This year, they used 100% indigenous yeasts, and the élevage was in new barrels (50%) and 4,000-liter oak foudres and lasted 12 months, followed by another six months in 20,000-liter oak vats. This is serious, harmonious and subtle, more elegant than any vintage before, reflecting the freshness from the year. It's nicely built, very proportioned, with balance, freshness and abundant but fine-grained tannins. It's one of the finest if not the finest vintages to date. A total of 112,755 bottles, 3,354 magnums and some larger formats were produced. It was bottled in August 2023. (Luis Gutiérrez)
