O grand vin do château, propriedade de François-Xavier Borie, apresenta nesta colheita uma excelente qualidade, sustentada por uma das mais elevadas percentagens de Cabernet no coupage dos últimos tempos. Elegância, fruta madura, chocolate preto, alcaçuz, mineralidade e taninos finos, mas persistentes, com uma capacidade de envelhecimento excecional.

Clima
Embora 2021 seja lembrado pelas geadas ocorridas no mês de abril, a localização de Grand-Puy-Lacoste entre o rio e o mar permitiu que a sua vinha saísse ilesa dos danos causados. A brotação foi bastante precoce e as chuvas, especialmente em junho, exigiram uma vigilância especial para evitar o míldio. Julho também foi muito fresco e húmido. Agosto seguiu essa tendência mais fresca do que o habitual, mas sem chuvas, o que permitiu que as videiras amadurecessem em boas condições e compensasse o frio de julho. A chegada do bom tempo definitivo ocorreu em setembro, favorecendo uma colheita madura e saudável. Em geral, o ciclo foi uniforme, sem extremos de calor ou chuva.

Vindima exclusivamente manual de 24 de setembro a 8 de outubro de 2021.
Vinificação
Dupla seleção das uvas, uma antes do desengace e a segunda após este procedimento. Maceração prolongada de aproximadamente 3 semanas. A mistura ocorreu em dezembro de 2021.
Envelhecimento
Estágio em barricas de carvalho francês (75% novas)

James Suckling:

A refined, classic Pauillac with cassis, pencil shavings, ash and cherries. Juicy and really fine on the palate with silky tannins unwound into a layered, long finish. A refined, elegant interpretation that does not fall short on intensity. Real finesse here. Already delicious, but can hold, too.

The Wine Advocate:

The 2021 Grand-Puy-Lacoste is one of the vintage's successes, wafting from the glass with aromas of cassis and raspberries mingled with notions of violets, rose petals, pencil shavings and cigar wrapper. Medium to full-bodied, with a deep, layered core of pure fruit framed by ripe acids and sweet tannins, its suave, charming profile means that it will offer a broad drinking window. A slightly lower percentage of new oak, with lighter toasts, is reflected in better barrel integration out of the gates.

Decanter:

Lovely strong concentrated nose, full of Cabernet menthol and blackcurrant markers. Concentrated and so lively and juicy, really lifted with bright acidity, almost tart, but then pulled back by the salty, gravel minerality. Long with bite and a sense of power. A really nice, shining, tangy example. Not so tannic, they're super fine, but this has plenty of flavour and sense of excitement. I like it with its strong mentholated finish alongside clove, liquorice and tobacco.
