O Els Pagesos Brut Nature 2017 é muito mais do que um espumante; é uma homenagem líquida à resistência e à sabedoria dos «els pagesos», os agricultores que zelam pela paisagem do Penedès. Sob a direção de Ramon Parera e Jordi Arnan, este singular «branco de noirs» nasce da rebeldia da Sumoll, uma casta tinta autóctone recuperada de oito pequenas vinhas com mais de 30 anos, plantadas em solos calcários pobres.

Tasted once again, the 2017 Els Pagesos is an unusual sparkling wine from red Sumoll grapes. It has a golden color and a very different nose with notes of hay and straw, medicinal and balsamic. It was a very dry year with low yields, and the small grapes delivered very good balance. It's a fresh wine from a warm year, a year of concentration, with high acidity and a strong limestone chalky sensation. It refermented in bottle after five months in tank and was in bottle with the lees for 78 months. They disgorged all the bottles in February 2023, and the wine shows better now than one year ago; it seems to have more concentration but also more freshness. It was a very concentrated year but keeping the freshness. The Sumoll yields were very low, and the bunches were small. It has crazy parameters: 12.42% alcohol, a pH of 2.87 and very high acidity, even after it went through malolactic fermentation. This is sharp, mineral and austere, textured and energetic, with long aging potential in bottle. 1,000 bottles produced. It was disgorged in March 2025. They didn't produce this wine in 2018 and jumped to 2019 as the next vintage and 2021 after that. (Luis Gutiérrez)
